ST JOSEPH HOSPITAL
HOSPITAL CAMPUS ARCHITECTURAL UNIFICATION

1100 W. Stewart Drive
Orange, California

The Project – an acute care hospital campus that has grown over the years without a design aesthetic that followed consistent standards. The project included exterior conceptual architectural design services in three phases. Phase I included the main entrance, three story west facing building, and south facing three and five story buildings. During this phase a new entrance porte cochere with connecting covered colnnade and pedestrian kiosk structures were added to the west facing entrance. The west facing three story building's parapet was elevated and a cornice/band detail was added to be compaitible with the adjacent existing Spanish colonial building. The three and five story south facing buildings facade was redesigned adding texture and detail to a flat uninteresting elevation. Phase II encompassed an elevator building and a 235 foot long pedestrian bridge connecting the main hospital campus to their existing outpatient pavilion building. The bridge was detailed to resemble the covered colonnade (Phase I) and be sympathetic with finish materials on the existing outpatient pavilion building. The new three story elevator building was designed to be consistent with the pedestrian kiosk's (Phase I) styling. Phase III was the new emergency room building. The buildings' main patient entry and ambulance entrace canopies were designed to resemble the west facing (Phase I) porte cochere, with the blind colonnade detailing on the one story building sympathetic in design to the covered colonnade on the west face (Phase I) of the main hospital entrance building.
